Having been homeless twice in my life, I can attest to the fact, that is is the easiest way to recover your life, when handled properly. First is all it should not be viewed as a permanent situation. Consequently, it is not about how others view you,it is about how you view your self. Primarily, how you carry yourself. people will treat you accordingly. I made it a point of acting as if I was the Queen of England visiting the homeless shelter, and as a result I had a great deal of favor with the staff and counselors.
When people see you as a survivor and not a victim, they will bend over backwards to help you return to being a productive member of society. The only things that should keep people (under normal circumstances) on the streets more than 6 months are drugs, mental illness,or a lack of reaching out for help. I am not saying that it is easy to get off the streets ,but what I am saying is if you constantly remind yourself you deserve better, you will find other’s viewing you as deserving better. The Social Worker, the Probation Officer, the Shelter Staff will all become your greatest alie’s. Your external circumstances do not determine who you are internally. Lets face it folks, we live in the greatest country on earth. Be blessed on your way back up!
